Skeleblog

Experimental Skeleton is an underground art group that strives for research and break through in the visual arts. Before going to this presentation I never noticed the underground art world stirring in Tampa's streets. Inspired by Bryon Gyson and William Burrough's "Dreamachine", Experimental Skeleton created a dreamachine that was much larger. They also created "the wishing well", an installation that was put in the middle of the exhibition where onlookers were to throw in money and record there wish.

Marcel Duchamp

Marcel Duchamp was a pioneer in the art world for years, starting ideas such as decontextualization and interactive art pieces. His piece entitled "fountain" where he just submitted a urinal to an exhibit raised many questions and redefined art as we know it. Now art is whatever an artist considers to be art. In the photo above is an example of his new style of art. "Rotary Glass Plates (above) is one of the first interactive art pieces that spins to create a visually appealing windmill effect.

Joseph Beuys

Joseph Beuys was a performance artist from Germany. Recognized as one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, his works have influenced many of the great artists that preceded him. His pieced rose awareness of social and humanity issues that few dared to express. An example that we saw in class was his performance art piece titled "How to Explain a Picture to a Dead Hare" where he wore a gold mask while he paced around a room trying to explain the works on the wall to the dead hare.

Orlan

Orlan is a female french artist who is known for eccentric ways and unusual methods. She was one of the pioneers of performance art using herself, the artist, as a medium to display her art. Her earlier pieces were very involved in sexuality and the phenomenon's of human nature. Later she started experimenting with plastic surgery, she literally made herself the artwork that. Adding horns to her head, she has transformed herself to become literally a freak of nature.

Replacing the band

After sitting in class and discussing how electronic music has transformed music from more band oriented to being able to do it single handedly I took more notice to how this was actually happening. Here is a video of an artist from Australia that has replaced everything but himself. He provides the instruments, lyrics and even replaces the stage crew and venue.

Apple

After presenting my performance art piece I started noticing more people talking about this idea of cell phone tracking and questioning what apple has been up too. Here is a clip from south park that aired on comedy central two days after I presented m project.

War of the Worlds

Since listening to War of the Worlds I'm not as surprised that people actually got scared that an attack was actually happening. Orson Welles did a great job at creating suspense through the music and the dramatic voice of the Richard Pierson. It actually sounds as if this was really happening. I'm very surprised at how good it was and couldn't even imagine hearing this for the first time when radio was just evolving.

What happened between 1952 and 1971

A lot had changed between 1952 and 1971. In 1952 America was patriotic and and excited for opportunity. However in the years proceeding, many events took place changing the way Americans would see the world. First, the Civil rights movement took off in the early 1960s. In 1963 John F. Kennedy was assassinated, causing a state of shock in the United States. After his assassination the war in Vietnam started, causing major protest and unrest in the youth. When Nixon was appointed president things started to turn towards a more positive era but then was quickly marred by presidential scandal in 1972 where 5 men where arrested for involvement in a buglary that had ties to the White House. This caused much protest against the government and the people to fend for themselves.

Stock Market Crash

The Stock Market Crash in 1929 started with the roaring 20's, a time of wealth and prosperity. However, in 1929, the stock market crashed, beginning what is known as the Great Depression lasting 12 years. It wasn't until the beginning of WWII in 1941 that things started to improve. The difference between the Great Depression and the one we just experienced was that we were currently in a war when the market crashed in 2008 which was the answer to the answer to the one of 1929.

Origin on Jazz Music

Jazz music originated between the 1920s and the 1930s in New Orleans when prohibition in the United States banned the sale of alcohol. Originating from "Ragtime" and played mostly by African-Americans, jazz was looked at like hip-hop today and viewed as a music with very little respect. Places called "speakeasies" where alcohol was sold illegally became popular venues for jazz music to be played.

Animation Response

After watching this animation I've come out pretty confused and it was a little disturbing. The opera music in the background set the mood from the beginning that this wasn't going to be a happy ending. It was interesting how the transition between colors and the mood of the music changed along with it. In the beginning scene where they are making love it was very soothing and quite music along with a brighter picture but it became very dark and depressing when the man left and became darker as the animation progressed.

INTRODUCTION

My name is Ryan Gentilucci from Bethesda, Maryland. I am a Junior Communication Major. Some of my favorite things to do are play soccer and lacrosse, go to concerts, hang out with friends, draw, watch movies and listen to music. I really love art and have taken art classes since I was very young. Out of this class I hope to explore the relationship between art and technology and learn more about both of them. Art is influenced by technology in so many different ways and as technology grows, so do the possibilities of art.
